Last week I spent three days in Brighton, just a couple of hours from home, and...
Not gonna lie, I actually RELAXED.
Unapologetically me
Like, full-body exhale, brain-on-airplane-mode relaxed. ✈️ No phone. No existential fridge staring. No stack of dishes judging me from the sink.
And while floating, I had a thought:
Why is it so much easier to unwind when we’re not at home?
Sure, being out of emails and Slack notifications helps. ❌💻
But I think it goes deeper, Reader.
Let me explain:
When we’re somewhere new, we knowwe don’t know what's going on.
So we start paying attention.
We notice the odd little coffee shops, the quirky street names, and the guy dressed as a seagull riding a unicycle (true story) and weird turistic sh*t.
Weird turistic s*it exhibit A
That quality of noticing is mindfulness, baby.
No need for meditation apps, Tibetan bowls, or lighting incense you’re possibly mildly allergic to.
Just notice stuff. That’s it.
And my point is:
You don’t need a vacation to know that you don't know, and to start noticing stuff around you with fresh eyes.
There's ALWAYS something new to notice.
And science keeps shouting this at us:
HOW we pay attention is a much better predictor of happiness than WHAT we’re doing per se.
Even if what we’re doing is just another weekend at home, or facing yet another challenge at work.
🌱 What is coming up?
Glad you asked, because next week is International Coaching Week.
To celebrate and give back to this community, I’m offering 2 PRO-BONO coaching packages (usually goes for £600). At no cost. Valid until 18th May.
Who’s it for?
You, if
You’re into mindfulness
Down to do a commitment for 5 sessions and do some real inner work
Thinking about growing your own coaching or mindfulness or any kind of side business, but currently stuck somewhere between “I have a vision” and “I am delusional”
